A local non-governmental organisation, Padare has taken the initiative of partnering the government and other NGOs responsible for gender issues to map the way forward on issues concerning empowering rural women, the ZBC reported.
With the theme for this year's commemorations focusing on the empowerment of rural women, the major thrust is to enable women to gain equal opportunities in accessing control over means of production.
According to the Ministry of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development, government is a signatory to conventions on the empowerment of women and it has made strides to include women in all sectors of the economy and in the affairs of the state.
However, according to Padare and another NGO, Women's Action Group, government needs to do more in terms of expediting the policies which seek to empower women, particularly those in marginalised areas.
The challenge which remains is for all stakeholders to fully embrace gender sensitive policies to promote, participation, and implement programmes that seek to empower women and the girl child.
