Rapist jailed for 72 years

The Masvingo serial rapist, Charles Matanga, has been sentenced to 72 years in jail for eight counts of rape he has been convicted of so far.
The 32-year-old could get more years behind bars as he faces 20 other cases which include rape and murder.
Masvingo magistrate, Dambudzo Malunga found Matanga guilty of rape on eight counts, three of which involved minors aged 13, 14 and 16.
Matanga committed his crimes in Masvingo district and Chivi, and communities were now living in fear due to the violence he inflicted on his victims.
Magistrate Malunga said it is despicable for any man to violate women in the manner that Matanga did.
In handing down her sentence, the magistrate said the accused's behaviour was akin to that of a beast and stressed that the courts will continue to protect the rights of women.
The Masvingo community thronged the magistrate court as they wanted to witness the sentencing of the man who has caused untold suffering to girls and women.
Matanga was arrested in Chivi yesterday after police received a tip off from members of the public.
