SUSPECTED gross negligence by police on Monday caused an accident which injured five people after the cops threw spikes on a pirate taxi which was ferrying passengers from Forbes Border Post into Mutare city centre along Beira road.
The police, believed to be from the Border Control Unit, are said to have thrown the spike bar on the pirate taxi following a chase.
It then rolled twice before landing on the other side of the lane, injuring five people including the driver of the taxi, who was identified as Billy Muzanenhamo.
The injured were rushed to hospital.
Witnesses said the police were suspecting that taxi-registered AEE 0524 — was ferrying smuggled goods from Mozambique.
Manicaland province police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa could neither deny nor confirm the accident saying his office was yet to be seized with the matter.
Government last year banned the use of spikes on motorists by the police.
