Gweru City Council acting town clerk, Vakai Chikwekwe has revealed that the local authority sold Kudzanai Bus Terminus to private investors, who were eager to turn the long distance bus station into a shopping mall.

Responding to inquiries from councillors at a full council meeting on Tuesday regarding the status of the bus station, Chikwekwe said the place had been sold to private players, he, however, declined to name.

"When the rank [Kudzanai] was sold some time back and they [private investors] want to develop a shopping mall," he said.

"Contingent measures are being taken to relocate to a convenient place."

Chikwekwe could also not be drawn to reveal when the investors plan to start construction of the shopping mall.

In 2014, council announced plans to convert Kudzanai into a shopping mall and invited private players to partner the local authority in the project with the new terminus set to be built opposite Mtapa Police Station.

Servicing of the new terminus was, however, abandoned under unclear circumstances and the place has since been lying idle with residents growing maize on the place over the years.

The relocation of the terminus was part of council''s plans to de-congest the central business district and prevent health hazards through uncollected garbage at the bus station.
