THE LAW SOCIETY OF ZIMBABWE
STATEMENT TO CORRECT SOME DISTORTIONS PUBLISHED BY DAILY NEWS,10 MARCH 2018
The Law Society of Zimbabwe would like to correct some distortions that were carried in a Daily News article published on March 10 2018. The article was titled "Lawyers speak on ED's Legal Acumen".
The article gives the impression that the Executive Secretary of the Law Society of Zimbabwe commented on the President's Legal acumen. This is not true. More than two weeks ago the writer of the story, one Gift Phiri sought to confirm the registration status of His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe Cde E.D. Mnangagwa. As the keeper of the Register of members of the Law Society, the Executive Secretary confirmed His Excellency's registration status. He further confirmed his year of registration. He also confirmed that His Excellency the President was properly registered by the High Court after satisfying all the requirements for registration.
It is denied that the Executive Secretary said His Excellency never practiced law. It is however a notorious fact that he never practised law as a Legal Practitioner in Zimbabwe as at all material times he was serving the Government as a Minister. This did not require any confirmation from the Law Society.
The statement is mischievous and suggests that the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe is not legally competent. The Executive Secretary can confirm that the nature of the inquiry was to seek confirmation that His Excellency was not a registered legal practitioner. Upon being advised of the correct position the writer actually remarked "wauraya nyaya yangu." meaning, "you have destroyed my story."
It is sad that the writer unprofessionally connects two unrelated stories to satisfy his unknown agenda.
