Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai told a prayer meeting, organised by the Zimbabwe Council of Churches at Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo Saturday, that The Daily News was raising political tension in the country by deliberately publishing falsehoods.

Brandishing a copy of Saturday's issue of The Daily News which carried a story headlined "Mugabe wants war," with comments he said were falsely attributed to him, the Prime Minister said the sensationalisation of news stories by the private media was disappointing.

"We want peace to prevail in the country, but we have problems with some newspapers that write misleading and inaccurate stories.

There is a story that claims I said (President) Mugabe wants war. I never said that, it's not true."

Tsvangirai said he had only spoken about the need for specific reforms before the country could hold fresh polls.

He said the newspaper was only trying to seed disharmony in the inclusive government and urged the nation to pray for its leadership.
