A political commentator Liberty Bhebhe has said the real change for Zimbabwe is becoming more apparent considering the crisis rocking the ruling Zanu PF which is being haunted by its former leader Robert Mugabe who describes it as illegitimate.
Mugabe in an interview with foreign media said President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his administration are not correct in their leadership as they would not have gained power if not by efforts made by the military.
"Mugabe's media briefing, which was strategically planned to happen just before the United Nations Development group vice chairperson starts his mission in Zimbabwe, threatens to make 2018 a real watershed election and yet presents us with a difficult moment in our nation. Real change is becoming more apparent for Zimbabwe but tragically it seems it may happen with the help of a tyrant who presided over the most brutal regime in southern Africa," Bhebhe said.
"Mugabe is hell bent on de-legitimising the Mnangagwa regime not for the same reasons as all progressive democrats but other reasons. It is now more apparent that his decision to oppose Emmerson mnangagwa is about protecting this family and most importantly his wife."
Bhebhe said Mugabe's open invitation to a dialogue with Emmerson is driven by his desire to protect his assets and family.
"I guess the is why he invited the world to his mansion, so that people can see that his wife is living in confinement (luxurious confinement though). Which is why he held the press briefing at his house not in South Africa where he spent a few days last week. The regime in Harare therefore finds itself in a difficult moment. How can the opposition capture this moment for change? Do we still have a real opposition?" he said.
