The Ministry of Health and Child Health Care has threatened to stop paying salaries of government hospital doctors who have gone for three weeks on strike.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Ministry of Health and Child Welfare wrote to Chief Executive Officers of government hospitals, provincial medical directors, the Health Services Board and the Salary Services Bureau advising them of the directive.

Government directed cessation of salary and allowances for members who proceed at any time of leave without unauthorised leave of absence.

The memo read: "Heads of institutions are duly reminded of the provisions of the Public Service Commission circular number 18 of 2000 referenced c/260 which states that heads of offices, heads of departments and heads of ministries are directed to cease salary and allowances for members who absent themselves from duty without authorized leave of absence.

"The salary and allowances should be ceased immediately on the 14th day of continuous absence from duty by advising the Salary Service Bureau directly," the perm sec said in a statement.

On Monday, the government claimed to have increased doctors' allowances by 50 percent, a claim dismissed by Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association as a lie.
