THE death toll in the accident involving a Mutare City Council vehicle has risen to two after another municipal police officer succumbed to injuries sustained during a high-speed chase with an errant commuter omnibus which had allegedly evaded a police checkpoint.

Council spokesperson Spren Mutiwi confirmed the death, although he could not divulge the names of the deceased.

This came amid reports that the driver of the commuter omnibus which the municipal police officers were chasing, handed himself over to the police in the presence of his lawyer, Chris Ndlovu.

The kombi driver, identified as Ian Gwandingwa, reportedly handed himself to police and had culpable homicide charges levelled against him.

Ndlovu claimed his client failed to stop when he was caught violating municipal traffic by-laws because he was a second offender, adding that he sped off after the municipal cops threatened to assault him.
