Drunk prison guard loses gun to mentally disabled man

A Zimbabwe Prison Service (ZPS) guard, Obert Vengesai (47) allegedly lost his pistol while drinking beer at Gwayagwaya Night Club in Chinhoyi last Sunday.
The firearm was recovered from a mentally disabled man at Chinhoyi bus terminus the following day.
Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident yesterday and said Vengesai was employed by the ZPS in Harare.
It is alleged Vengesai took time off duty and went to his farm in Tengwe over the weekend. On his way back to Harare, he boarded a haulage truck which arrived in Chinhoyi at around 2am.
The prison warder then decided to while the night at the night club. He later left the night club and sought shelter at the bus terminus, but fell asleep shortly afterwards.
At 5am he woke up to discover that his pistol had gone missing, prompting him to report at Chinhoyi Central Police Station.
Police officers on patrol then recovered the firearm from the mentally-challenged man based at the bus terminus.
"As the police we want to establish if there was an act of negligence and how the prison warder lost his gun. If investigations point to an act of negligence, then we are going to prefer charges against him under the Firearms Act," said Mabgweazara.
