HARARE - The wait is over. Results of an inquest into the death of Zimbabwe's most-decorated soldier Solomon Mujuru are out.
Attorney General Johannes Tomana confirmed to the Daily News that he had received the report from Walter Chikwanha, the magistrate who presided over the matter.
"Give us time to study the results so that we may put our minds to it and make a sober conclusion. We must not rush into making findings public before we understand if they are making any legal sense," Tomana said.
"It is not only the family that is concerned about the results but everyone has a stake to play in this case, so we have to ensure that we don't make half-baked judgments as they could cost us in the future. We are dealing with the safety of the people as well as the life of an individual here."
He also confirmed receiving a letter from the Mujuru family attorney, Thakor Kewada, requesting a copy of the findings.
"I just received the letter today but we can't rush in making this public before understanding if it makes logical sense as well as if it is in consistent with the findings," said Tomana.
Kewada said he wrote the letter to Tomana requesting for the results considering the time frame that has lapsed since the closure of the inquest.
By yesterday, the Mujuru family lawyer said he had not yet received the report. He said Tomana had claimed he had handed over the report to Vice President Joice Mujuru confidentially.
Chikwanha, made his findings after examining evidence from 38 witnesses who testified in the 13-day public inquest that also included submissions from Vice President Mujuru.
