A 55-year-old Chinhoyi man is reportedly facing a murder charge after he fired three shots on a suspect that was evading police arrest on Sunday.
Sources close to investigations allege Patrick Shaw pulled his pistol in company of two police details and fired three shots on Edmore Phiri (33) who was being accused of unlawfully entering in Bruce Douglas'(62) and stealing goods worth $500.
"The accused was assisting police to arrest two suspects who had unlawfully entered into Douglas's kitchen in Murereka farm while he was away with his wife Susan.
When Douglas returned with his wife he found two men in his kitchen and confronted them of their move but he was attacked with golf sticks and stones before the assailants fled with valuables of $500, explained the source.
Douglas called his friend Shaw who came and the duo filed a police report at Murereka where they booked out in company of two police details.
The quartet arrived at Murereka and identified one suspect who resisted arrest and started running away.
Shaw allegedly pulled a pistol and fired three shots directly on Phiri at close range of 8-10 metres.
The now deceased continued to run for almost 100 metres and subsequently fell on the ground and was ferried to Chinhoyi general hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Meanwhile, according to an internal police memorandum seen by Bulawayo24.com the police recommended serious punishment on the accused saying he lacked knowledge on firearm handling.
