A PROMINENT Mutare businessman, David Munowenyu, who had just sold his vehicle for $20 000, lost all his fortune to three street kids who broke into his other car and stole the money while he was merrymaking at a local drinking spot.
With the cash in their pockets, the urchins embarked on spending sprees, with one of them even hiring a taxi to travel from Mutare to Harare to buy some goodies.
One of them allegedly soaked himself in beer and could hardly utter a word when the police finally closed in on him in Sakubva.
The other one is still at large. Only $7 252 has been recovered.
One of the suspects, Bronson Madhishi (17) appeared before Mutare magistrate, Mrs Ania Ndiraya on Tuesday facing theft charges.
Madhishi was denied bail and he will back in court on March 27.
Prosecutor, Mr Aaron Nyamasoka, prosecuted.
The State heard that on March 10, the director of Munoz - one of Sakubva's leading liquor outlets - Munowenyu went to Harare to collect payment for his Toyota D4D truck he had sold to Eddie Kebab for $20 000 in November 2011.
He returned to Mutare on the same day at around 7pm.
On March 11 at around 1am, Munowenyu drove to Mutare and proceeded to Manicaland Motoring Club for a beer drink.
When he arrived, he parked his Mercedes Benz outside the club leaving his bag containing $20 000 stashed between the front seats. He ensured all windows and doors were closed before proceeding into the club.
While he was drinking, Madhishi and two other accomplices smashed the driver's window of the vehicle using a cross-wheel spanner.
They took a wallet containing $20 000 and disappeared. They shared the money and Madhishi allegedly got the lion's share of $10 000.
He hired a taxi and went to Harare for shopping.
Mr Masoka said at around 3am, a friend of Munowenyu approached him in the club and told him that his car's door screen had been smashed.
"Munowenyu went outside to check and he found out that the screen had been broken and the wallet containing the money was missing. A spanner used to smash the window was also left at the scene," he said.
A report was then made to the police.
Detectives investigating the theft revealed that one of the street kids, Kenneth Michael Zhangazha was arrested in Sakubva in a drunken stupor with $558 in his pockets.
Madhishi who was nabbed in Harare by detectives from the CID Vehicle Theft Squad had bought himself a pair of jean trousers, a black suit and a red jacket.
He was found with $6 693.
