A Kwekwe based soldier and his civilian brother have been arrested for allegedly demanding bribes from illegal gold panners in Zvishavane masquerading as part of a crack unit who launched an operation against the miners.
The soldier Brighton Hove based at Battlefields in Kwekwe and his brother End reportedly terrorised the area clad in army uniform and demanding cash from the illegal miners.
The panners reportedly got fed up and effected a citizen's arrest on the two by laying an ambush and tying them with chains and wires before handing them over to the police.
The Hove brothers appeared before Zvishavane magistrate Mildred Matuvi and were remanded out of custody to Tuesday.
Prosecutor Tawanda Tsatsa told the court that on various dates in February, the pair went around in army uniform claiming to be part of a police operation code named "chikorokoza chapera."
He said they allegedly collected bribes ranging from $50 to blankets until the illegal panners in the area met and decided to take action against the two.
