Presidential Affairs and Monitoring Implementation of Government Programmes minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi is set to battle it out with National Railways of Zimbabwe board chairman Larry Mavima for the Zvishavane-Shurugwi senatorial seat in Zanu-PF primary elections set for May 5.

Mumbengegwi is the current Senator, but Mavima says it was now his turn to represent the area in the upper House.

"I am Mberengwa to the core, my heart has always been part of the people because I was born there and raised in that area and all my dreams and aspirations have been born out of that rich community and it is with humility that I handed my CV, so that I can pay back by serving the people," he said.

Zanu-PF Midlands provincial spokesperson, Cornelius Mupereri yesterday confirmed that both Mumbengegwi and Mavima had submitted bids to contest the Zvishavane-Shurugwi senatorial seat.

Mumbengegwi is seen by many in Zanu-PF as a close ally to former President Robert Mugabe and a loss in the party's primary elections spells doom for his political career.
