Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union has condemned the decision by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga to terminate contracts of nurses who engaged in collective bargaining.
In a statement to show solidarity with nurses, the labour union said the VP is out of order.
"The ZCTU notes that it is the first of its kind in the history of Zimbabwe for a whole Vice President to issue a statement claiming to have fired striking workers.
"Zimbabwe is well aware that the Vice President is not an employer of nurses."
ZCTU said nurses are employed by the Health Services Board and as such, Chiwenga should be ashamed of usurping the powers of a board formed by the government.
The labour union said Chiwenga's actions show that he is out of depth with the management of the health sector.
"His actions also vindicate skeptics who claim he is not fit for the job.
Nurses embarked on industrial action on Monday demanding a review of their night and on call allowances. They also demanded better working conditions and improved supply of medication and equipment of health centres.
Noted ZCTU; "it is no secret that the staff in the health sector is poorly remunerated. There is also serious shortage of equipment for them to be able to diligently discharge their duties."
The labour movement castigated the continued appointment of Health and Child Care minister, David Parirenyatwa to the same portfolio saying he has contributed to the portfolio for a very long time.
ZCTU implored Chiwenga to exercise restraint, tolerance and apply a sober mind in resolving the impasse before more bodies pile at hospital mortuaries.
