The majority of nurses who were handed dismissal letters have reapplied for their jobs.

Updating the nation on the nurses strike, Health and Child Care Minister, Dr David Parirenyatwa told reporters that only 5 093 nurses had been relieved of their duties out of a 17 000 strong workforce.

Minister Parirenyatwa said retired, unemployed and newly graduated nurses are also being recruited as they expressed keen interest to join the health sector.

He condemned individuals who are trying to play politics in hospitals saying they are an area of high security and high confidentiality which must never be used for political mileage.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA) said they have called off the strike.

In a statement, ZINA said the strike has been called off to pave way for re-opening of negotiations with government after realising that the industrial action had been hijacked by political elements.
