A total of 5 974 nurses lost their jobs during the just ended industrial action by nurses working in the government health institutions, Ministry of Health and Child care has revealed.
The ministry said those who lost their jobs withdrew their services ended yesterday 22 April 2018.
The total number of nurses employed in the public health sector is 16 974.
Services in our hospitals have since returned to normal through utilisation of health workers who ignored the calls for a strike, the ministry said.
Nursing staff has been "beefed up by the recruitment of qualified nurses who were not in employment as well as nurses below 70 years who were retired."
The ministry revealed that "the majority of nurses who were dismissed have since reapplied for re-engagement and Government has permitted them to resume duty pending final approval from the employer."
The ministry said it was regrettable that nurses embarked in a strike when it had shown commitment to address their plight and thanked those who remained patriotic.
"We thank those nurses who continued to provide their services over this period. We wish to sincerely thank members of the public for their understanding during this period," the ministry said to the media.
