FIRST Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa yesterday called on African parliamentarians to support Chief Fortune Charumbira's bid to land the Pan African Parliament (PAP) presidency in elections slated for May in South Africa.
"I have come to plead with you to help Zimbabwe to get this position because the PAP constitution states that the presidency is rotational and there should be a change and Chief Charumbira here has been in the PAP for so many years, hence, he has the experience to hold such a position," she said.
"I would like to thank you for coming for this meeting and also that you take this message back home so that your countries may support us."
Speaker of the National Assembly Advocate Jacob Mudenda said that he was grateful for the support given to Charumbira's candidature.
Mudenda said Charumbira had President Emmerson Mnangagwa's backing and he has availed some money for the campaign.
PAP head and campaign chairperson McHenry Venaani said this was the time for Zimbabwe to ascend to the PAP presidency.
"We are grateful for the support that we are getting from Zimbabwe and I must say that this is an opportunity for Zimbabwe to take up this position as it will help them discuss the issue to do with sanctions as PAP president meets the European Union president regularly. So I must say we are supporting Chief Charumbira."
Venaani said his team supported PAP rotational leadership, citing that the current PAP president Roger Nkodo from Cameroon was elected into office in 2015 and wants to run for a third term which was contrary to rotation guides stipulated by the African Union.
Mudenda said Africa needed leaders who adopt the culture of giving up when their time was up.
Chief Charumbira promised to bring change if elected into power.
