A MEDICAL doctor allegedly drugged and raped a patient at his surgery, a Harare magistrate heard yesterday.
The woman, who is an economics student at Africa University in Mutare, had consulted the doctor after suffering from stomach cramps and irregular menstrual periods.
The woman allegedly woke up briefly after being drugged to find Alfred Namsa committing the offence.
She then passed out again under the effects of the drug.
Namsa, who has a surgery at Fife Avenue Medical Centre, had earlier proposed love to the woman.
He reportedly offered her a lift home while asking for forgiveness.
The doctor was not formally charged when he appeared before regional magistrate Mr Rodgers Kachambwa who remanded him out of custody to April 10 this year on US$200 bail.
He was also ordered to surrender his passport and to report twice per week to the police.
Namsa was also ordered not to interfere with witnesses.
Prosecutor Mr Editor Mauto alleges that on March 19 this year, the complainant called Namsa telling him that she was unwell and needed to be attended to.
The doctor told her to visit his surgery.
When she arrived 15 minutes later, Namsa's receptionist had knocked off and the complainant told him of her illness.
The doctor is alleged to have proposed love to the patient before instructing her to remove all her clothes after telling her that the examination he was going to carry out would make her vomit.
After removing her clothes, it is alleged, the doctor told her to lie facing upwards on the examination table as he needed to inject her with a pain reducing drug.
The complainant was injected with an unknown drug and felt dizzy before she passed out.
However, the State alleges she noticed that the doctor was lying on top of her and tried to fight him but failed due to the effects of the drug.
The woman allegedly asked him what he was doing and Namsa told her that he wanted to do an unspecified act.
The complainant, it is alleged, told him to stop after noticing that he was raping her before she passed out completely.
She woke up after an hour and noticed that she had been covered with a cloth while naked and still feeling dizzy.
When she asked him what had happened, the doctor, the State says laughed and told her that he had got all what he needed from her.
He then allegedly offered to take her home and apologised to her without saying what the apology was for.
The complainant went home and slept.
The following day, Namsa allegedly called again apologising and the complainant reported the matter to the police leading to the doctor's arrest.
