Finance minister Tendai Biti believes US$100 million went missing from the proceeds of recent diamond sales.

Biti said he would launch an investigation into the claims, as civil servants up their demands for a share of the diamond cake.

He said the state-run Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ) claimed it gave the treasury US$170 million in 2010 from sales in the disputed Marange diamonds. But the minister said only seen US$64 million was accounted for. The MMCZ said some of the money went to taxes.

Meanwhile, President Robert Mugabe earlier said that some of the diamond money would be used to increase civil servants salaries.
