HARARE - A Harare magistrate yesterday ordered a mental examination of a suspected armed robber after he likened the courtroom to a spaceship inhabited by snakes.
Harare regional magistrate Esthere Chivasa ordered Brainmore Nyirenda, 35, who initially appeared in court on March 12, to be examined by two doctors before the case proceeds to trial.
He is jointly charged with Fungai Wanenenga, 30.
Nyirenda stunned the court on Tuesday when he said he was seeing snakes in the court house.
"I work 39 hours a day. All these people want to get into the spaceship, they can't all fit in and they should remove snakes in their purses," said Nyirenda.
The duo is facing two counts of armed robbery and another of unlawful possession of a firearm.
Prosecutor Sarah Bosha told the court that the two approached Chamunorwa Siwombe, a taxi driver, while he was parked at corner Samora Machel Avenue and Chinhoyi Street and hired his vehicle to Belvedere on February 17.
Upon their arrival in Belvedere, the court heard the two ordered Siwombe to stop the car so that they could alight from the vehicle.
When the vehicle stopped, the court heard Nyirenda pulled out a revolver threatening to shoot Siwombe. He ordered him off the driver's seat.
They drove off in Siwombe's vehicle, leaving him stranded after stealing his two cell phones, driver's licence and his national identity card.
During the same day, it is alleged the pair proceeded to Glen View, where they pounced on Tinashe Dube, a salesman for Bakers Inn.
Dube was delivering bread using a DAF truck, while in the company of his co-workers Tendani Mviha and Bothwell Shambare.
The two parked the taxi they stole from Siwombe, blocking the truck. They allegedly confronted Dube ordering him to surrender his cash.
According to court papers, they got away with $2 617 and drove off to Glen View 3 where they later dumped the taxi.
The two were later arrested by police after a tip-off. When they were arrested, they were found in possession of an Amadeo38 revolver. They will be back in court on April 16.
