A Mashonaland man, Rafinos Dambwara (50) of Sungai Village, Gutu, under Chief Gadzingo has been jailed for burning regalia and tools of the trade belonging to his mother who is a traditional healer.

Dambwara will spend three months in prison after he was found guilty of malicious damage to property.

He confronted his mother during a healing session and burnt all her regalia and tools of her trade including bones (hakata). He accused her of casting a bad spell on his family.

Gutu resident magistrate Mr Nyasha Vhitorini sentenced Dambwara to five months in jail for burning Elizabeth Shonhiwa's (69) tools. However, he conditionally suspended two months of the sentence.

Charges against Dambwara arose in November last year in Gadzingo communal lands when he went to his mother's homestead and found her performing a healing session dressed
in traditional regalia. The regalia included hats fitted with ostrich feathers and several multi-coloured clothes.

He grabbed the tools and regalia and threw them into a fire.

The damaged items were valued at US$80 and nothing was recovered. Shonhiwa reported the case to police and Dambwara was arrested.
