GOVERNMENT has recruited 240 new nurses in Manicaland to improve the staff complement in public hospitals.
In April, the Ministry of Health and Child Care gave hospitals permission to recruit more nurses from those qualified, but unemployed and retired nurses between the ages of 55 and 70.
Manicaland provincial medical director, Dr Patron Mafaune last week told The Herald that the process of recruiting new nurses had been completed two weeks ago.
"We were given an allocation of 161 nurses and 79 primary care nurses by the ministry and we reached that quota two weeks ago and they have all been deployed," she said.
She said the recruitment of new nurses would help improve service delivery in hospitals.
"The numbers will go a long way in ensuring that we deliver better service to the people of Manicaland," said Dr Mafaune.
The move to recruit more nurses came after Government realised that most public hospitals were short staffed, a development that had contributed to the deterioration of healthcare offered to patients.
The full complement of nurses employed in the public health sector in Zimbabwe is 16 974.
