Restoration of Human Rights (ROHR) Zimbabwe has condemned the actions that were taken by the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) to charge John Mahlaberi with contravening section 3(1) of the Prison Staff Discipline Regulations 1984, for expressing his political opinion.
ZPCS have accused Mr Mahlaberi of showing loyalty to Mr Chamisa and disloyalty to President Mnangagwa for allegedly calling Mr Chamisa "my President" on Twitter.
According to the Zimbabwe Constitution every Zimbabwean citizen has the right of freedom to associate with any political party and the charging of Mr Mahlaberi by the ZPCS contravenes that right.
In his tweet on the 28th of May, President Mnangagwa is quoted as saying , "We have said time and again we will hold free and fair #elections and we are fulfilling this commitment. In this new era of #freedom and #hope we welcome all of our international partners to come and celebrate #Zimbabwean democracy."
In light of President Mnangagwa's statement we urge ZPCS to rescind their disciplinary case against Mr Mahlaberi and to allow him to have the freedom to express his political opinions freely without repercussions to his person or to his livelihood.
