One National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) employee died yesterday while eight others were injured when two locomotives collided at Oreti near Zvishavane.
NRZ public relations manager Nyasha Maravanyika confirmed the accident, saying it was caused by signalling communication failure.
"The head-on collision was between a local locomotive and a goods train from Rutenga. It (goods train) was given authority to proceed to Rutenga, but en route at Oreti, it hit a stationary locomotive," Maravanyika said.
"As a result, one NRZ staffer died while eight were injured. Two people that sustained injuries are still detained at United Bulawayo Hospitals, while five have been treated for injuries and discharged."
Maravanyika said the NRZ signalling equipment was now obsolete, adding that there was now need for recapitalisation of the parastatal to enable it to refurbish aged equipment.
