Deputy Minister of Finance Terence Mukupe has said Zimbabwe needs more civil servants to be able to be able to deliver to the citizens.

"What Zimbabwe needs is an increase in the number of civil servants... Clear shortages of nurses, teachers, doctors and grade 1 to 3 civil servants. Also when you look at the wages of the lower tier civil servants one can tell that their salaries are not in line with our goal of creating an upper middle income country in the short term," he said.

"The solution lies in evaporating the credit expansion phenomena which has led to the phantom bank deposits of over $8bn coupled with a massive debt recovery process by Zimra, local authorities and banks who are collectively owed over $8bn... This would be a painful exercise as this would force business persons to seek out new equity partners with expansion capital which would be a good phenomena...."

Mukupe said the increased income side of our economy will only start bearing fruit in a meaningful way 2 to 3 years from now with proper planning, increased horticulture funding and industrial mega deals...
