A bid by a Harare police officer to earn extra cash backfired after she was duped of $40 by a conman who had promised her a part-time job.

Twenty-eight-year-old Betty Dube fell for one of the oldest tricks in town when she gave away her money to the conman late last month.

Details of the case emerged at the Harare Magistrates' Court last week. It is understood the accused, Scott Phiri (40) of Epworth, allegedly approached the police officer in central Harare and allegedly offered to employ her for 30 minutes in his shop for an undisclosed amount of money.

The officer is said to have accepted the offer after which Phiri allegedly told her to hand over all the cash she had to avoid a "mix-up" in the shop. She gave him $40 which he handed to his colleague who fled the scene. She promptly arrested Phiri.

Phiri appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Don Ndirowei facing theft charges.

He, however, denied the charge.
