Redcliff town is set to conduct a cleansing ceremony along the 20km stretch from Hunters bridge flyover to Kwekwe bridge flyover along the Gweru-Kwekwe highway to curb the surge in fatal road traffic accidents.

In an interview following a fatal road accident that took three lives including that of 98.4 Midlands FM presenter and Zimpapers Correspondent Mr Lovemore Zigara in a head-on collision just outside Kwekwe along the Gweru-Kwekwe highway on Saturday afternoon, Redcliff Mayor Councillor Fred Kapuya said the 20km stretch from Hunters bridge flyover to Kwekwe bridge flyover was fast becoming a black spot.

"Plans for the cleansing ceremony of the 20km stretch form Hunters flyover to Kwekwe flyover are complete and we are going ahead with the process next weekend. We had shelved the plans to cleanse the stretch because of the primary elections, which the political parties were doing in preparation of the 2018 harmonised elections," he said.

Clr Kapuya said church and traditional leaders had been invited to take part in the cleansing ceremony to curb fatal accidents.

He said at least two fatal road accidents were being recorded along the stretch every month, which he said was too much.

Clr Kapuya said the cleansing ceremony will be a two-day event where church and traditional leaders will take turns.
