A Zaka man committed suicide by drinking a cotton pesticide in protest after his in-laws confiscated his bicycle over outstanding lobola.

Jeremiah Mbwende (26) of Madzvova Village took his life after his in-laws had forcibly taken away his bicycle over unpaid lobola for their daughter.

Masvingo police spokesman Inspector Tineyi Matake, yesterday said Mbwende's body was taken to Musiso Mission Hospital for a post-mortem.

Insp Matake said Mbwende drank a cotton pesticide soon after his in-laws had taken away his bicycle.

"He drank a cotton pesticide soon after his in-laws had just left with the bicycle they had taken away from him. His wife found him sprawling on the ground after taking the pesticide and he died a few minutes later and was taken to hospital,'' said Insp Matake.

He said police were still investigating the matter to establish what transpired.

"We are still investigating the matter to establish what actually transpired but the deceased's body was taken to Musiso MissionHospital,'' said Insp Matake.

On March 21 this year Mbwende allegedly assaulted his wife Chengeto Kore (17), forcing her to flee to her parents' homestead.

Last Monday Mbwende's in-laws went to his homestead with their daughter in a bid to solve the dispute.

After successfully arbitrating the dispute between the two, Kore's parents also allegedly demanded their outstanding lobola from their son-in-law.

He said he had nothing to offer. They allegedly took away his bicycle as part of the settlement of the outstanding lobola.
