Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has accused state media of promoting violence, hatred and genocide. The state broadcaster and newspapers have been awash with reports blaming the recent spate of political violence on Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party and presenting President Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF party as the victims. "The public media has become a threat to public security by promoting hate, division and even genocide," he said.

The government controlled media has accused the MDC of stoking the violence to create a picture of instability and to convince their western allies to extend the current sanctions regime.

The MDC says Zanu-PF is behind the violence that has seen thousands of their supporters displaced from their homes. The European Union resolved yesterday to extend by a further year, the sanctions, which include a travel ban and asset freeze on President Mugabe and 135 other individuals and 31 companies.

The European bloc says recent progress in Zimbabwe is not significant enough to warrant a change in its policy.
