The diplomatic community in Zimbabwe was on Tuesday mourning the death of the Spanish ambassador, who died in a car crash in Namibia.

Ambassador Pilar Fuertes Ferragut, who doubled up as Spanish envoy to Zambia and Malawi, was vacationing in Namibia when the tragedy struck Monday afternoon.

A statement issued by the Embassy said a book of condolences had been opened for tributes. It also announced the suspension of all its "cultural activities until further notice."

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai was among those who expressed their condolences. His party described Ambassador Ferragut as "a friend of the people of Zimbabwe."

"She represented her country with distinction and acquitted herself well in the execution of her duties," the Tsvangirai MDC said in a statement.

Ambassador Ferragut was posted to Zimbabwe in 2009. Details on the repatriation of her body were not immediately available.
