A suspected member of a gang of armed robbers believed to have been behind 19 robbery cases in Harare and Mashonaland Central died last week after exchanging gunfire with police in Chitungwiza.

The suspect was pronounced dead on arrival at Harare Central Hospital.

It is understood detectives confronted the gang, leading to a shootout in a maize field in the town. The suspect sustained a gunshot wound while his colleagues were arrested.

In a statement last Friday, police said: "During the course of investigations, detectives were involved in a shootout with the accused in a maize field in the Chitungwiza area where the suspects were hiding, resulting in their arrest.

One of the suspects was shot in the process and he died on arrival at Harare (Central) Hospital. Further investigations revealed that the suspects were responsible for 15 cases of armed robbery in Mashonaland Central and four in Harare."

In a separate case, police have arrested five suspected armed robbers in Beatrice and recovered various stolen goods worth thousands of United States dollars.

Law enforcement agents are hot on the heels of gang leader Richard Timba, who managed to escape.
