Four villagers from Mhondoro were last week jailed for one year for killing and eating 2,5 long metre python.
Simba Nduviwa (28), Tinotenda Shiri (23), Jide Chiwire (25) and Tatenda Panda (22) were hauled before a Chegutu court for contravening the Wild Life Act.
Magistrate Fabian Feshete convicted the four and and sentenced them to one month in prison or an alternative $200 fine.
The four pleaded with the magistrate for a lenient sentence saying they committed the crime under the influence of alcohol.
It is the state's case that on New Year's eve, the four were coming from a beer drink and along the way encountered the giant reptile and killed it.
The four then carried the protected species to the village where they skinned it and shared the meat among themselves.
The matter came to light when a local headman got a tip off from fellow villagers in the area who found the four in possession of some of the meat.
