Five passengers were burnt beyond recognition and four others died when a South African bound Toyota Hilux collided with a haulage truck in West Nicholson about 200 kilometres from Bulawayo.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe said the driver of the Hilux which was carrying eight passengers encroached on to the lane of the haulage truck resulting in a collision.
"Both vehicles caught fire in the process. The fire brigade and police were called in and managed to retreive four bodies from the Hilux but unfortunately the five others were burnt beyond recognition," said Dzirutwe.
"The driver of the haulage truck survived with minor burns and injuries and was taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital where he is recovering."
Dzirutwe said the police were not ready to release the names of the deceased as they were yet to notify their next of kin.
"We are appealing to the members of the community to contact the police and identify their loved ones," said Dzirutwe.
"We also urge road users to observe traffic regulations to protect life. Indications show that the driver of the Hilux tried to overtake ahead of an on coming vehicle."
