Newborn baby's body discovered in the bush on Easter

A 39-year-old woman from Zamanyoni Village in Kezi has been arrested for allegedly exposing her newly born baby to cold weather until it died on Easter Saturday.

She then allegedly buried the baby in the bush. Two passers-by were drawn to a heap of stones with a pungent smell where the baby was left.

"I was with my friend, walking past the area when suddenly the area was full of a pungent smell. Out of curiosity we started searching for where the smell was coming from and realised that it was coming from under a pile of stones, which we moved aside and dug a hole leading to the recovery of the remains of the infant," said one of the villagers.

He said the body was wrapped in a white cloth and the two villagers quickly notified the police.
Matabeleland South police acting spokesperson Sergeant Loveness Mangena, confirmed the incident yesterday and said the two villagers reported the matter to the police upon unearthing the body.

"We can confirm that a 39-year-old woman, Lindiwe Ncube, has since been arrested over a case of infanticide but investigations are still under way," said Sgt Mangena.
She said Ms Ncube was alone on 2 April when she gave birth and later committed the offence.

Sgt Mangena urged members of the public to seek help if they encountered problems and to desist from crime as a means of solving their problems.
