FORMER Kwekwe mayor Shadreck Tobaiwa is eyeing a return to the helm of the local authority following his election as a councillor on July 30 on an MDC Alliance ticket.

Tobaiwa, who was ceremonial mayor between 2008 and 2013, but left office after he lost council elections to Zanu-PF, said he had unfinished business.

"I want to finish what I started, to up the developmental agenda of Kwekwe," he said.

MDC Alliance won 13 council seats, with one going to Zanu-PF's Maclean Nyakucherera.

In 2013, MDC-T lost seven council seats to Zanu-PF and owing to internal fights, some MDC-T councillors then voted for Zanu-PF's Matenda Madzoke for mayor.

Madzoke, judged as one of the best mayors by the Kwekwe Residents' Association, lost his re-election bid.

"I did my best and I am proud of my track record. I bow out with my head high and wish the new mayor and team a good run," Madzoke said.

Madzoke made headlines when he turned down an official car and, instead, ordered the local authority to use the money to buy a refuse collection truck.
