AN unlicensed Gweru taxi-driver committed suicide after hitting two pedestrians with his car. He assumed that they had died on the spot.

Acting Midlands Police Spokesperson Assistant Ethel Mukwende confirmed the incident that occurred last week.

She said, "Police in Gweru are investigating a case of suicide by drowning where a 23-year-old man was found floating in a disused pool days after he was involved in a car accident where he hit two people.

Asst Insp Mukwende said the tragic incident occurred last week, when Ganizani Phiri, the now deceased, of Mkoba 10, Gweru, left his home around 6pm driving his car.

"As he was driving, the car veered off the road and hit two pedestrians. It is alleged that he panicked and fled from the scene leaving his car behind," said Asst Insp Mukwende.

The police attended the scene and found the two victims severely injured. They were ferried to Gweru provincial hospital for treatment.

However, it is alleged that out of shock Phiri ran away after hitting the two victims perhaps assuming that they had died on the spot.

"On 28 July a body was found floating in a disused pool near Mkoba 10, Gweru. The matter was reported and the body was retrieved; it was later positively identified as that of Phiri who was on the run after hitting two people with his car," said Asst Insp Mukwende

Asst Insp Mukwende appealed to members of the public to communicate with their family members when they are involved in cases which are difficult to handle.
