Zimbabwe Prison Services Commissioner, Retired Major General Paradzai Zimondi has invited members of the media to get a true account of the on-goings within the country's prisons instead of writing falsehoods that inmates are going for days without food and medication.

Stories of Zimbabwean prisoners suffering in silence due to lack of food and medication have been awash in the media, painting a negative picture of the country's prison services.

But the ZPS Commissioner says the stories are falsehoods, adding that the media fraternity is free to tour the prisons and get a true account from the inmates.

"All the basic needs that are needed by prisoners are there and it is unfair for members of the media to report falsehoods," said Major General Zimondi.

Some of the inmates who spoke to ZBC News said they are having enough food and most of the basic needs are available.

Meanwhile, the ZPS has joined the national campaign on tree planting and has vowed to make tree planting a habit rather than an event.

The move is aimed at complementing government's efforts in planting more than 10 000 trees this year.
