Diasporan donates soccer kit, health equipment to Nkayi residents

A CANADA-BASED philanthropist has donated medical equipment and soccer kits to several clinics and schools in one of the country's most impoverished districts, Nkayi.

Born and raised in Lutsha under Chief Sikobokobo, Busani Moyo (42) who left the country in 2011, said his passion was driven by the socio-economic hardships in the district.

"As a family, we donated health equipment including thousands of bandages, syringes and drips to Lutsha Rural Health Care Centre. We also brought some theatre equipment that was taken to Mbuma Mission Hospital to help medical practitioners during surgical procedures,"Moyo said.

"We also donated complete soccer kits to five primary schools which are Lutsha, Fudu, Pepani, Mphakama and Majaha. We also donated some soccer boots to Ihawu Lesizwe Club and we are looking forward to making it a yearly pledge. Our intention is to reach communities as far as Binga."

Moyo said some of the donations came from former Amazulu goalkeeper Dominic Sithole.

"As someone who was raised in Nkayi, I was pushed by the passion to make a difference and uplift my community."

In Binga, Zimbabweans based in South Africa, Canada, Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom are constructing Chilaba Primary School which caters for more than 300 pupils under Chief Sinampande and have also provided pupils with stationery.

The school will have nine classrooms, a library, solar-powered laboratory and a canteen among other amenities. The initiative came after a picture of the pupils learning under trees and seated on rocks went viral on social media.

The school was the brainchild of community members whose children walked close to 30km to the nearest school after government failed to intervene.
