AN 84-YEAR-OLD woman has been arrested in Nyamandlovu for brewing an illicit beer popularly known as tototo.
Alice Ngwenya of village 6B, under chief Deli, was found in possession of 60 litres of raw alcohol, and apparatus that she uses to brew the tototo.
Following a tip-off, members of the neighbourhood watch committee raided Ngwenya at around 4PM on Wednesday. A source that preferred anonymity said while patrolling the village, members of the neighbourhood watch committee got a tip-off that the suspect was brewing and selling tototo at her homestead.
They proceeded to the homestead where they found 60 litres of tototo in a bedroom hut. Matabeleland North police spokesperson Chief Inspector Siphiwe Makonese confirmed the incident.
She said the suspect was assisting police with investigations and would appear in court soon. Chief Inspector Makonese warned members against selling illegal substances.
"Police will not hesitate to arrest anyone found in possession of illegal drugs and alcohol. It is a crime to be found in possession or trading in illegal substances such as tototo and mbanje.
"We also applaud members of the public for reporting such culprits to curb the distribution and use of dangerous drugs and substances in our communities.
"We urge people not to hesitate to inform police or community leaders of any criminal acts happening in their communities. Together we can fight crime," she said.
