A HARARE man is said to be in the habit of denying his own children their rights to birth certificates when hauled for maintenance by ex-wife at the Harare Civil Court.
The court heard when Vimbai Marowa told the court where she had applied for maintenance that her ex-husband George Mabuto refuses to take birth certificates for his two children despite being their father.
"Your Worship, I want $200 for two children who are 10 and 4 years old.
"I am a vendor and I earn $20 per month; it is not enough to pay rent and buy groceries for the children.
"He is into concrete building business and earns at least $250 per month and it is enough for him to pay children's school fees as the younger one also needs to start school.
"I am also seeking that he agrees to assist in taking children's birth certificates as it is his responsibility as a father.
"The older child could not be enrolled at a government school because there is no birth certificate," she said.
In response, George disputed the allegations that he is failing his responsibility as a father to take birth certificates for his children he sired with his ex-wife.
"Your Worship I could not take the birth certificates for the children because she took the children away to her mother's house when we had a fight.
"I can offer $30 per month.
"I am self employed and my income varies from $20-$50.
"I pay rent $40, groceries $15 and transport $15 therefore I cannot afford that much," he added.
Presiding magistrate Nyasha Marufu ordered him to pay $60 per month until the children are 18 years.
