A man who allegedly misrepresented to be a pastor and duped a senior police officer's wife of chickens worth US$1,500 has been denied bail. Collins Jongwe misrepresented to Priscilla Pondo that he was a pastor at Upper Room Ministries Church and wanted the chickens for a wedding.
Jongwe who is charged with Blessing Mukombwe on fraud charge were remanded ion custody to 10 May after the magistrate ruled that they were not proper candidates for bail, with the propensity to commit further offences.
Allegations are that on 24 February, Pondo was approached by Jongwe who purported to be a pastor at Upper Room Ministries Church and ordered 300 dressed chickens for a wedding. Priscilla reportedly told Jongwe that the chickens were not ready and will only be mature in March. The court heard that sometime in March, Pondo was called by an unknown person who inquired if the chickens were ready.
Further allegations are that on 30 March, Jongwe called the complainant and told her that he wanted to buy the chickens for US$1,500 and she said she wanted the money in hard cash. Jongwe allegedly instructed Pondo to deliver the chickens at Guta RaMwari Church in Glen Norah B. Pondo reportedly loaded 320 chickens in her car and went to St Peters Kubatana and she met Jongwe's accomplice who is still at large, and was directed to the place and offloaded the chickens.
After offloading the chickens, she was given a purported Kingdom Bank RTGS proof of transfer document showing that money had been transferred into her account. The court heard that after a few minutes, Jongwe and Mukombwe arrived at the church and collected the chickens from the caretaker and gave him one chicken as a token of appreciation.
Pondo went to her Metropolitan Bank to check if the transfer had succeeded and was told to return the following Monday where she then discovered that no money had been deposited. She went to the church and was told that the people who bought her chickens were strangers who had asked him to temporarily look after the chickens. Pondo immediately made a police report leading to the arrest of the two.
The State is opposed to the admission of bail of the two citing that they have pending cases and have the propensity to commit further offences.
