Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Charity Mazula said Tinashe Mapire was in the company of his friends, Bernard Mutyanewadya (10) and Fibion Maramwidze (9), when the incident occurred.

She said the three were playing on the banks of Jongwe River while monitoring their cattle grazing.

Asst Insp Mazula said a section they were playing on suddenly collapsed, trapping Tinashe and Fibion.

One Nomore Manyere, who was nearby, tried to rescue both boys, but only managed to save Fibion.

"These boys are very young and it is not proper to let them herd cattle on their own."
