A bogus policeman, Evans Beretu (39), was last Sunday caught pants down by patrolling uniformed police officers, allegedly raping a 27-year-old woman at Zimbabwe Grounds in Highfield.

Yesterday, Beretu appeared before regional magistrate Sandra Mupindu charged with rape, but he denied the allegations arguing the sexual intercourse was by consent. Prosecutor Tinashe Kanyemba told the court on the day in question, Beretu stalked the woman who had parted ways with her boyfriend after having sexual intercourse somewhere around Mukuvisi river area.

The court heard Beretu approached the woman just as she got inside the yard of her residence and ordered her out, saying she was under arrest for having sexual intercourse at Mukuvisi.

It is alleged Beretu ordered the woman to come with him to Machipisa Police Station and on the way they passed through Zimbabwe Grounds. While within the grounds, Beretu is alleged to have requested the woman to have sexual intercourse with him for her to be released without a charge. But the woman refused, prompting Beretu to forcibly have sex with her.

The complainant, however, left the court in stitches when she said she did not scream during the rape as she had already done so during sex with her boyfriend. During the incident, the court heard, patrolling uniformed police passed by and allegedly caught Beretu in the act. However, in his defence, Beretu said the woman agreed to have sex for a fee.

"I asked if I could have sexual intercourse with her for a short time for a fee and she agreed. She asked where we would do it because she had a boyfriend and was afraid they would separate if he found out. She asked if I had a condom and I said yes. I wore a condom and she removed her underwear and we had sexual  intercourse," Beretu told the court.

Beretu further said when the police arrived, he had not settled the bill, and the woman was caught with her panties in her hands. He told the court the woman later turned against him when the police threatened to detain both of them for loitering. The trial continues next Thursday.
