AN armed man robbed a supermarket in Emakhandeni in Bulawayo of $600 after firing a shot in the air and ordering everyone in the shop to lie down.
The incident happened on Friday at about 7pm at Apollos Supermarket and Bottle Store. Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident yesterday and appealed to members of the public to help police in their investigations.
"We received a report of an armed robbery that occurred on Friday evening. The man who has not been identified yet was armed with a pistol.
"He shot once in the air and ordered everyone who was in the shop to lie down. He went to a till operator and ordered her to empty all the money she had in a plastic bag," said Insp Moyo.
He said the man proceeded to the cashier and also ordered him to empty the safe box before taking all the money.
"The man then took the money amounting to $600 and fled the scene towards the west. He was wearing blue jeans, and a face mask. He was identified as slim built and short," said Insp Moyo.
He said a report was made to Luveve Police Station and investigations were under way.
"Extensive investigations are under way and we are appealing to members of the public who have information that could help police to come forward," said Insp Moyo.
He said members of the public could continue working with the police by giving tip-offs at their nearest police station, using suggestion boxes or calling the Bulawayo hotline number (09) 885479.
