India vice president due in Zimbabwe

INDIAN Vice President Venkaiah Naidu is due in Zimbabwe early next month in the first such high level visit in more than two decades.

Naidu will be in Zimbabwe between November 2 and 4 as part of an African tour that will also see him visit Botswana and Malawi.

According to Secretary Economic Relations T S Tirumurti, this will be the first high level Indian visit to Zimbabwe since then prime minister H D Deve Gowda visited the country in 1996.

An eight-member delegation from the Indian electoral commission was also in Zimbabwe for the country's July 30 elections.

 Vice president Naidu will hold talks with President Emmerson Mnangagwa followed by delegation talks.

According to secretary Tirumurti, Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), including in the areas of mining, culture, information and communication technology and power are expected to be signed during the visit.

India will also undertake upgrade of Hwange thermal power station through a US$310 million Line of Credit, he said.
