President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been sucked into the Hwange Colliery debacle after revelations that he and Minister of Mines Winston Chitando were captured by a person called Shepherd Tundiya who has been running the show at the mine.
This was revealed by Hwange Board Chairperson Juliana Muskwe when the Board appeared before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee in charge of mines.
"When then Finance Director was suspended there is a guy by the name Shepherd Tundiya who is involved in providing transport service from the mine to Zimbabwe Power Company. He came to me and said Minister of Mines Winston Chitando said you must return Financa Director Tawanda Marapira." Muskwe said
"He phoned me and said he is phoning from President Mnangagwa's office and he is inviting me to the State House at 10 AM. When I asked for a notification he said it's the President who said I should be summoned.
"When we went to the President s office, we only saw a director called Tapfumaneyi who instructed that we should work well with Tundiya. He (Tundiya) then took control and ordered the board to reinstate (acting managing director Shepherd) Manamike. He also called for another meeting at Chitando's office where he gave instructions and surprisingly, Chitando was quiet and did not say anything.
"From that day, Tundiya took control of the mine. He began giving us instructions on who to suspend and what to do on the mine. He told me that I must never talk to the Minister directly but must talk through him.
"We will go to the Minister s office and Shepherd will speak and the minister will keep quiet."
The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee Temba Mliswa was harsh on the Board and questioned them why they took instructions from an outsider whom they just saw with the Minister and where not certain of his powers.
