A 44-year-old man went berserk yesterday and attacked his wife in the glaring view of court officials after he lost a $42 000 maintenance case.

Livieson Pamuchigere slapped and attempted to strangle his wife Cathrin as they exited the court room.

The incident occurred after Harare magistrate Trevor Nyatsanza convicted and sentenced him of defaulting paying maintenance.

Nyatsanza slapped Pamuchigere with a five to 10 months wholly suspended sentence on condition that he deposits $2 000 by 3pm yesterday.

Nyatsanza also ordered Pamuchigere to deposit $42 000 into their jointly account on or before March 31, 2019 and that he pays a minimum of $4 000 on or before the first day of every month.

As prison officers and police officers manning the courts rushed to the aide of Cathrin, Pamuchigere fled and was caught in the court's car park.

The father of three was apprehended by a police officer and handed over to the officer-in-charge at the courts.

As he was being dragged back to court, a seemingly angry Pamuchigere shouted: "You are busy taking my pictures? I don't mind."

The matter has since been referred to Harare Central Police Station where a charge of violating the Domestic Violence Act is set to be opened against Pamuchigere.

Prosecutor Talkmore Muganhiri said on October 18, 2013 at the Harare civil court, Pamuchigere was ordered to pay school fees for his former wife and three minor children.

Muganhiri said between October 2013 and July 2018, Pamuchigere defaulted paying maintenance which accrued to $42 200.
