A BUS conductor from Nkayi died on the spot after he was run over by a bus when he jumped off the moving vehicle to run after a passenger.
Mr Mayibongwe Ncube (21) of Mfume village, under Chief Sikhobokhobo jumped out of the bus before it had stopped.
The Nkayi-Lupane bound bus that was being driven by Mr Gwazai Chikwadze (42) of New Luveve suburb in Bulawayo had 26 passengers on board.
The incident occurred at around 5PM last Saturday at Mjena area.
Matabeleland North police spokesperson Chief Inspector Siphiwe Makonese confirmed the accident.
"On approaching the 35 KM peg along the Nkayi- Lupane road, the driver reduced speed to pick up a passenger. Before the bus stopped at Cross Mjena, the bus conductor jumped out and was run over by the left rear wheels and he died on the spot.
"We suspect the victim misjudged the speed of the bus and missed his step to the ground," said Chief Insp Makonese.
The body was taken to Nkayi District Hospital Mortuary enroute to Mpilo Central Hospital Mortuary in Bulawayo for post- mortem.
Chief Insp Makonese warned members of the public to avoid doing risky things that expose them to danger. "People should value human life and not partake in risky activities.
"If the now deceased had not attempted to disembark from a moving bus, a life wouldn't have been lost unnecessarily," said Chief Insp Makonese.
